From Coast to Coast: My Journey Through Photography

There’s something magical about capturing a moment — the kind of image that doesn’t just show what happened, but feels like it’s still happening. That magic is what drew me into photography, and it’s been the constant thread throughout my journey from the golden coasts of Australia to the sun-soaked neighborhoods of Florida.
My name is Kat Wilson, and photography has always been more than a profession for me — it’s been a companion to some of the most transformative chapters of my life. This blog post is a little different. It’s not about tips or camera gear. It’s about the story of how I’ve grown as a photographer and person through the lens — and across continents.
A few years ago, I packed a backpack, a camera, and a lot of curiosity and boarded a flight to Australia. I had no job lined up, no itinerary, and no certainty about how long I’d stay. What I did have was a Working Holiday Visa and the feeling that something important was waiting for me down under.
Australia greeted me with open skies, dramatic landscapes, and a warmth that went far beyond the weather. I worked my way around the country, doing everything from hospitality gigs to helping on small farms in rural New South Wales. But it was in between the workdays — when I had a camera in my hand — that I felt most at home.
I wandered beach towns where surfers moved like clockwork with the tides. I stumbled upon live music in Melbourne alleyways and followed kangaroos across dusty plains. Each scene was a story, and I felt compelled to tell it in still frames. It was in Australia that I first began to truly trust my creative eye, to let instinct guide the shot rather than overthinking every composition. I also began to appreciate the subtle ways that light tells time — the long, amber shadows in the late afternoon and the crisp blue of morning mist.
After a year of sunsets, street photography, and learning to travel light, I returned to the U.S. with a new kind of focus. I had grown not just as a photographer, but as a person. I had learned how to adapt quickly, connect with strangers, and find beauty in the unplanned.
That’s when I made Tampa, Florida my new home base. The contrast was immediate, but the creative spark never faded. Florida is lush and expressive in ways that complement my Australian experience. Instead of red deserts and eucalyptus trees, I found pastel-colored homes, tropical greens, and soft Gulf Coast skies. I discovered a local community filled with small business owners, artists, and families all eager to preserve their own meaningful moments.
I began offering business and lifestyle photography here — capturing people in their element, whether it’s a boutique owner arranging products, a young family having a picnic, or a couple dancing barefoot on the beach. What I loved in Australia — the honesty and spontaneity of unscripted moments — is what I now aim to bring to every shoot in Florida.
My time abroad taught me not just how to see, but how to feel before I press the shutter. It taught me to approach each photo session not as a job, but as a collaboration — a shared experience where we’re both shaping the final image together.
Photography has this quiet power to create connection, even between people and places that seem so far apart. Australia and Florida couldn’t be more different in some ways, yet both gave me inspiration in every corner. I believe that duality — the wanderer and the rooted artist — has come to define my style. It’s natural, intimate, a little adventurous, and always sincere.
So if you’re looking for a photographer who sees the world a little differently, who’s lived it on foot with a camera in hand, and who brings that lived experience into every frame — welcome. I’m Kat Wilson. I’d love to meet you, hear your story, and maybe help tell it through photos.
Thanks for reading — and if you’ve ever dreamed about taking your work somewhere new, let this be your nudge. Sometimes the best shots come when you’re a little lost and the light is just right.
